This plant has a Chinese name called "马草" among the Chinese folks in Malaysia. Translated literally, it means "horse grass". The hype about this plant is its health value, which according to what I have read ---- amazing! However, I am not able to find a good reputable reference on the claims. Anyway, I am more interested about its identity (i.e. botanical name).
I think it should be a Pennisetum species. The plant looks very much like the Elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum), except that it is much shorter. Elephant grass is common in the wild in Singapore. As for the "shorter" version, based on the information from the forum pages, it seems to originate from Taiwan. They may or may not be the same plant.
