The name of this plant is sometimes referred to as Croton laevifolius. Based on the information from the Nationnal Herbarium Nederland website, Croton laevifolius is a synonym of Croton griffithii. If this is correct, the name Croton griffithii should be the accepted name.
But the story did not end here. The Croton website by the University of Wisconsin-Madison has treated Croton laevifolius as the synonym of Croton oblongus while Croton griffithii is an accepted name with no synonym associated to it. I am not able to solve this confusion. However, since this is Croton-dedicated research site and Croton oblongus is found in the IPNI website, I will treat Croton laevifolius as the synonym of Croton oblongus and Croton griffithii as a different plant.
So, is this plant I saw Croton oblongus or Croton griffithii? When I went over to the Plants of Southeast Asia website, there were displayed of dried specimens of both Croton oblongus and Croton griffithii. The plant that I have here resembles more closely to Croton griffithii as far as the leaves are concern. Croton oblongus has a much narrower leaves. Finally, I have decided that the name of this plant should be Croton griffithii.
